The premiere of one of the most prominent Lithuanian interwar composers Jurgis Karnavičius‘ opera “Radvila Perkūnas“ also took place in Kaunas, at the State Theatre 80 years ago, back in 1937. The author of the libretto is the Lithuanian writer and playwright Balys Sruoga. The opera tells the story of love that grows in the context of the events, which took place during a disastrous historical period of the state of Lithuania in 16th-17th century.
Author of libretto Balys Sruoga wrote: „In 1600 in Vilnius the domestic war between two grand families of Lithuania – Radvilos and Chodkiewiczi, almost began. The quarrel arose because of the girl – the orphan of the Duchy of Sluck Sofija Olelkaitė, who was under the patronage of Chodkiewiczi, and who fell in love with Jonušas – the son of Radvila Perkūnas.
