Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the stories which are similar to the story of Romeo and Juliette. The opera is based on the novel by Sir Walter Scott and tells a tragic story about two young people: Lucia and Edgardo. Lucia’s brother Enrico wants her to get married to Lord Arturo in order to be more influential himself. However, Lucia is in love with Edgardo who is the worst enemy of Lucia’s family. Edgardo is in love with Lucia as well and is eager to see his lover despite everything. Enrico counterfeits the letter from Edgardo to his sister in which Edgardo says that “he does not love Lucia any more”. Lucia receives the fake letter, becomes very disappointed and is forced to marry Lord Arturo. Successively, Edgardo shows up in the castle on the wedding day and acknowledges that her lover is going to marry another man. He becomes furious and leaves the castle cursing Lucia. Later the wedding guests find out that Lucia has gone mad and killed her fiancé. When Lucia enters the hall, she faints and later dies from grief caused by loss of her lover Edgardo. When Edgardo finds out that Lucia is dead, he commits suicide believing that he will meet Lucia in heaven. Moreover, the scene of madness and murder of Lord Arturo is regarded as one of the most significant soprano aria in the history of opera.
The premiere of the famous opera took place in 1835 in Naples (Italy).

Labai seniai Lietuvos teatruose teko matyti tokį spektaklį, kurį su malonumu žiūrėjau, ko gero dar su didesniu klausiausi, kuris pribloškė savo estetiniu skoniu, subtilumu. Visi komponentai – scenovaizdis, šviesos, kostiumai ir grimas, režisūra, muzika – čia liejosi į nedalomą visumą“
