It is wonderful to know our musical ELISABETH can now be seen at the Kauno State Musical Theatre in Lithuania.
What you will see on stage tells the true story of a woman who never gave up fighting for the right to live her own life. The backdrop and the costumes are historical, but the theme is very contemporary.
The real Elisabeth lived at a time when the era of the powerful monarchies was coming to an end. A millennial tradition was about to be replaced by modern civilization as we know it today. Although Elisabeth was part of a doomed world, indeed even represented it, she had no illusions about its downfall. A new time was on the horizon, and she was surprised that most people she knew ignored the signs.
Occasionally she compared herself to a “black dove”. She was different, did not fit in with her peers. No one understood her fears and desires. Like every human, she yearned for security, future and love. She could not find these things in the world she was forced to live in. That explains her unrest and melancholy.
That’s also one of the reasons Elisabeth keeps fascinating us. Her life was a flirt with death. She wrote poems that idolized death, she played with the idea to surrender to death, she adored death, though she never stopped to be frightened of dying. Her complicated love affair with Death s at the core of our story.

ELISABETH is considered the most successful German-language musical of all time.
The success of the production about the dramatic and touching story about the life, work and suffering of Empress Elisabeth, which started its international triumph in Japan as the very first musical export of VEREINIGTE BÜHNEN WIEN, has been going on for over 30 years. Since then, the masterpiece by Michael Kunze and Silvester Levay has been delighting audiences all over the world with productions in Austria, Belgium, China, Germany, Finland, Italy, Japan, Korea, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, counting almost 12 million international visitors.
So it’s all the more wonderful that ELISABETH is now being brought on stage for the first time in Lithuania and then also in the European Capital of Culture Kaunas. The premiere at Muzikinis Teatras Kaunas is also the premiere in the fourteenth country where this moving musical is shown, and Lithuanian the ninth production-language and thus another milestone its history.

Everyone has danced with Death
but no one like Elisabeth!
Elisabeth is a German-language musical about Elisabeth (also known as Sisi), the wife of Habsburg Emperor Franz Joseph I, focusing mainly on an imagined lifelong flirtation with Death himself (rendered as a handsome young man called “Der Tod“- German for “death”) and Elisabeth’s constant need for independence, often at the cost of her unconditionally loving husband and her hypersensitive son Crown Prince Rudolf. It is narrated from beyond the grave by Luigi Lucheni, the Italian anarchist who assassinated her in 1898. He does his best to turn the audience against her, but ultimately it is left to the viewer to decide about Elisabeth’s character.
It premiered in Vienna in 1992 and was responsible for launching the careers of Pia Douwes (Elisabeth) and Uwe Kröger (Death), who are today two of the most important performers in European musical theater. Elisabeth is also a popular offering by Japan’s all-female Takarazuka Revue. Various productions often reinterpret the show, including new songs and adding or removing whole plotlines, depending on how familiar an audience is with the historical background.

„Nuostabu, jog mūsų miuziklą ,,Elisabeth“ jau galima pamatyti ir Lietuvoje, Kauno valstybiniame muzikiniame teatre.
Tai, ką regėsite scenoje, pasakoja tikrą istoriją apie moterį, kuri nepaliaujamai kovojo už teisę gyventi savo gyvenimą. Miuziklo laikotarpis ir kostiumai yra istoriniai, bet pati tema labai šiuolaikiška.
Tikroji imperatorė Elžbieta gyveno tuo metu, kai galingų monarchijų era ėjo į pabaigą. Tūkstantmetę tradiciją netrukus pakeitė moderni santvarka, kurioje mes šiandien ir gyvename. Nors Elžbieta buvo pasmerkto pasaulio dalis, netgi viena ryškiausių jo atstovių, tačiau iliuzijų apie jo išsaugojimą ji neturėjo. Nauji laikai jau buvo regimi horizonte, todėl ją labai stebino aplinkinių abejingumas bei pranašiškų ženklų nepaisymas.
Elžbieta buvo kitokia, ji nepritapo prie aplinkos. Niekas nesuprato jos baimių ir troškimų. Kaip ir kiekvienas žmogus, ji tetroško saugumo, šviesios ateities ir meilės, tačiau to taip ir nerado pasaulyje, kuriame buvo priversta gyventi. Tai paaiškina amžiną Sisi nerimastingumą ir melancholiją.
Kita vertus – būtent tuo Elžbieta mus ir žavi. Jos gyvenimas buvo nuolatinis flirtas su mirtimi. Elžbieta rašė eilėraščius, idealizuojančius mirtį, ji žaidė su viliojančia mintimi atsiduoti į mirties glėbį, ji visa esybe garbino mirtį, paradoksalu, bet taip pat niekada nesiliovė jos bijoti. Painus Sisi meilės romanas su Mirtimi tapo mūsų istorijos ašimi.
