Sweet Charity is a musical based on the book by Neil Simon, including the music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Fields. The libretto is based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. This musical was directed and staged for Broadway by Bob Fosse, premiere occurred in 1966. The first staging was well accepted by the audience and critics, nominated and received many prestige awards (Bob Fosse received Tony award in 1966).
Sweet Charity is smooth, slightly ironic and presents the life of a young and naive woman Charity Hope Valentine. Her friends call her Sweet Charity because she is kind- hearted and generous for everyone. However, because of her good will she does not see evil in sinful and bad people. Despite painful experiences she is happy and sings, dances and continues to befriend every man she meets. The most important thing for the young woman is to find true love.
This musical was very popular in the USA, because new versions of the production featured the most popular actors of the time. One theatrical production was in 1986 and the other in 2005.
