The musical “SUGAR” is the musical adaptation of this film. Like the movie, the plot is based on B. Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond’s play “Some Like It Hot”. Here, the music is rooted in the best jazz traditions of the 1960s and 1970s, nostalgically transporting the audience to a retro-coloured, amusing satire of pre-war America’s criminal underworld. The story reveals how, on Valentine’s Day in 1929, a gangster massacre took place in Chicago. Two jazz musicians accidentally witnessed the event. To hide from the mafia hitmen pursuing them, the musicians disguise themselves as women and get jobs in a women’s jazz band. There, they meet the charming singer Sugar Kane, who dreams of marrying a millionaire. The guys get caught up in the whirlwind of a woman’s life and face things that are usually kept secret from men. How long will the guys manage to stay hidden when surrounded by half-naked girls sharing their most intimate secrets? Events begin to unfold in a direction neither musician had planned.
The musical “SUGAR” premiered on Broadway at the Majestic Theatre on April 9, 1972, starring Robert Morse, Tony Roberts, and Elaine Joyce. Over more than a year, 505 performances were staged. The success of the musical is evidenced by the fact that new versions of “SUGAR” return to Broadway every few decades.
****Remember how the world went crazy over two musicians dressed as women? In our country, that black-and-white film became famous under the title “Only Girls in Jazz.” In other countries, this cinematic hit was known as “Some Like It Hot.” With five Oscar nominations and Marilyn Monroe’s one of the most memorable roles of all time…
